This course focuses on essential elements of songwriting, including melodic techniques, chord progressions, and how they contribute to hit songs. This covers everything from crafting catchy hooks and analyzing successful melodies to finding the right singer, creating demos, and understanding the business aspects of songwriting, such as publishing and licensing.

This module explores various techniques for crafting dynamic melodies and harmonies, including the use of ascending and descending intervals, tempo variations, and different time signatures to evoke emotion and energy. It also covers advanced harmonic concepts like unexpected chords, modulations, and analyzing hit songs to understand effective melodic and rhythmic structures. 

This module explores common chord progressions used in contemporary music, highlighting their emotional impact and the genres where they are most effective. It also examines how chord progressions shape melody, lyrics, and song structure, with case studies of hit songs to demonstrate their practical application in creating memorable, impactful music. 

In this module, we will explore how musical arrangement shapes the emotional experience of a song, turning it into a powerful storytelling tool. You’ll learn how to use dynamics, silence, instrumentation, and orchestration to guide the listener through emotional journeys of tension and release, enhancing the connection to the lyrics. From choosing the right timbres to blending traditional and electronic sounds, we’ll uncover the techniques that arrangers use to evoke specific emotions and create lasting impressions. 

In this module, we’ll analyze hit songs by examining basic song information, structure, lyrics, melody, harmony, rhythm, and arrangement. We’ll focus on how production choices, dynamics, and mixing contribute to the song’s emotional impact and commercial success. Lets go over The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” in this module video. 

This module covers the essential aspects of songwriting, including selecting the right singer for a song, crafting effective demos, and understanding the roles of music publishers and songwriters. It also explores the importance of licensing, copyright, and additional revenue streams such as merchandising, live performances, and crowdfunding for Canadian songwriters.
